For more than eight years, an extended family of cats called the area between HEB’s parking lot and the adjacent property “home.” (HEB is the name of Kerrville’s local supermarket.) Over the years, a varied group of compassionate citizens and veterinarians from our community fed and provided spay/neuter and emergency medical care to these cats. Everyone in Kerrville shops at HEB and many have encountered “the HEB cats.” They watched them grow up and care about their well-being. HEB’s planned store expansion took over the only home these kitties had ever known, threatening them with a precarious future.

Volunteers at Rainbow Journey trapped these cats – about twenty altogether – and relocated them to our sanctuary situated on seven quiet acres in south Kerrville. The sanctuary currently houses approximately ninety cats in a ¾ acre fenced yard and several heated/air-conditioned shelters for the cats’ safety and comfort.

To accommodate the kitties displaced by HEB’s expansion, Rainbow Journey urgently needed to increase its fenced space, so we added another shelter to avoid overcrowding. HEB rejected our request for any sort of financial assistance, so we set a fundraising goal of $8,000 to add 30’x40’ of chain-link fencing, a 10’x16’ insulated portable barn with a wall-mount HVAC unit and concrete foundation, and additional specialized cat fencing. Our volunteers provided the labor and our new space is now complete. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who participated!

In addition to the expansion project, our regular on-going expenses to run the sanctuary are $2000/month. Expenses include dry food, canned food, treats, kitty litter, veterinarian visits, medicines, building and grounds maintenance, and utility costs.
