About Us
Rainbow Journey is facing eviction – please help us find immediate homes for our kitties!
We were created to be a never-kill, cage-free, lifetime care shelter for homeless cats in the end stages of life. We provide them with medical care and a safe and loving environment so they may live the remainder of their days with peace and security, knowing that someone loved them.
Our founder, Lyndsey Powers, passed away quickly after a battle with cancer in 2022. In the fall of 2023, Lyndsey's father Dave Powers, who owned the sanctuary's land, also passed away. Lyndsey's husband Matt Thurlow and other devoted cat lovers continue to take great care of the kitties. Unfortunately, with Lyndsey already gone, Dave's land passed to another family member who does not wish to allow us to continue our mission. Rainbow Journey was informed in late January 2024 that the estate would proceed with eviction, so we are working hard to find loving new homes for all our sweet kitties.
At Rainbow Journey, we have been devoted to providing the cats in our care with everything they need. The majority of our early cats came to us from Kerr County Animal Control; many were unadoptable due to age or medical conditions and were scheduled for euthanasia. In the past few years, many have come from TNR (trap, neuter, return) colonies around Kerrville, TX, such as the colony displaced by the Kerrville HEB expansion. Most had never experienced human companionship. Some had been abandoned by families who moved away and “set them free” to become a stray, always searching for food and always waiting for their families to return for them. With patience, unconditional love and compassion, all have happily adapted to their new environment, complete with human and cat friends.
The sanctuary has been operating continuously since 2013; in 2017 we incorporated as Rainbow Journey, a recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The sanctuary is situated on quiet acreage in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. A portion of the acreage has been fenced with special cat fencing that keeps our 90 or so kitties in and predators out. Also inside the fenced area are three large heated and air conditioned buildings for their comfort and safety.
Unfortunately, as we now face eviction, we are in desperate need of adopters for the kitties we'd planned to take care of for the rest of their lives. We have wonderful cats of all kinds, from working cats (barn cats) to lap cats. Please email, text or call us if you can help!
